Mommy continued telling the Valentine’s Day story. “I felt so bad for your Dad though. He was rushing all over the diner like a chicken with his head cut off. But, I knew that he was happiest when he was busy. He loved to stay busy. ‘Idle hands are the devil’s workshop!’ he used to say. He could seriously hustle, let me tell you. I have never seen a waitress, before or since, do the kind of leg work and foot work your Dad could do, and he had the tips to show for it! He was probably the best waitress they had there. He knew how to adapt to any situation and to any customer, no matter how rude or surly. He was just very, very good with people. I used to tell him he would make a great political leader, or a minister. That would always make him laugh. Even though he was for sure on his game, he did look tired and worried. I decided to write him a little note and slip it to him, to put his mind at ease. The note said: ‘Relax, we have all evening, you can even shower and dress at my place, if you’d like. Hugs and kisses.’ Well, needless to say, when he read the note, he looked very relieved. I had brought a book, since I carried my Guatemalan back pack everywhere with me back in those days. I was lost in some comparative religion text when I saw your Dad shivering and rapping on the foggy window.”
