Mommy continued telling the Valentine’s Day story. “I will never forget how sweet and beautiful your Dad looked in the soft light of the diner. Even though I knew he has just pulled a double shift, he seemed so well – put together to me. He looked like a princess in a waitress’ uniform. His little name tag was all askew. But that was the only tell tell sign that he had had one heck of a long ass day waiting tables. I opened the door for him and he had a little present for me and his evening wear in a garment bag slung over his shoulder. He was, of course, still in his diner uniform. He reeked of chicken fried steak, home fries and fried things in general. I pretended not to noticed. I kissed the back of his hand and brushed his cheek with the back of mine. ‘Are you exhausted, Darling?’ I asked. ‘You don’t know the half of it. It was one of those days. I did the work of three waitresses and all with no bus boys! I had to bus all of my tables. Turns out, Suzie, Janie and Gwen all came down with the flu, and Rico was thrown in jail last night for domestic abuse. I could hardly believe it when Liz laid all of that on my lap at the beginning of my shift! As you can imagine, I am ready to get out of this uniform, I can tell you that! Thanks for the offer to wash up at your place, I hope it’s not an imposition,’ he said.”
