Mommy continued telling the Valentine’s Day story about how she met a woman with more than one surprise, and, how that woman helped her do something very special for Daddy on Valentine’s Day. “As I walked away, I could hear Mabel singing a sweet song for Dottie in her wavering, quivering little voice. I’ll never forget it. She sang a song that your Grandpa used to sing to your Grandma, back in the day. It was a silly little song, that always made me laugh when I was little girl, and it made me miss your grandma and grandpa even more. If I remember right, I had to choke back a tear or two as I heard that familiar refrain echoing in the evening air, as I left Dottie’s duplex: ‘Who’s your little whosy? Who’s your turtle dove? Who’s your little whooo – sy, and who do you love?’ I can almost guarantee you I am butchering the true lyrics of that adorable little love song, but that’s how I remember it! It always made me smile as a little girl and it made me smile again, as a big girl, trying hard to be a woman. I headed back to the open – air market to get the ingredients for our special dinner, I searched my mind trying to remember if, or when I had told Dottie about my special plans for the evening. And to be honest, I couldn’t recall having relayed that information to her at all. Indeed, the fact that I hadn’t made me smile. She had that womanly wisdom only very special ladies have.”
